Great for hiking. Download USGS topo quads, import custom kmls, put phone into airplane mode to conserve battery, and I'm set. I like how you can create one main layer and use it across all maps. It makes organizing data much easier. I'd like the ability to pin maps to the top as "favorites" though. That would be helpful.
The app works great at placing your position on a static map of the area you're in. Unfortunately that's all it can do. If you're not in a location with a scanned map or travel outside of the downloaded map's area - the app is worthless. It would be great if all trails were in a dynamic mapping system but since they're not, this is better than nothing.
I have used Avenza mapa for several years and it used to work flawlessly. Admittedly I haven't used it for the past couple years, but now I want to use it again and it just won't function correctly. I can load a map from QR code, the app just sits there and keeps trying to focus. When I look for a publisher to but a map from it won't load a publisher list or search for the one I typed in. So at this point it is just taking up space on my phone and not useful at all. UPDATE: It eventually worked
