I first tried BCN when I was climbing an obscure pinnacle in California that is unofficially known as “Cartago Peak.” Despite having almost no idea how to use BCN or the borrowed phone, I managed to find the tricky route to the summit AND the way back to my car. I was sold on BCN. I bought my first smartphone and I’ve been using BCN for all my mountaineering trips ever since. I create a .GPX file with my route and important waypoints using CalTopo. Then I load that file into the phone and import it into BCN. I download CalTopo maps before leaving, and use BCN to help navigate in the wilderness. I drop a few breadcrumbs along the way to make sure I can find the way back to my camp or my car. After 30+ years using a map and compass, BCN is pretty intuitive. It’s like a map, only MUCH better. The GPS shows me exactly where I am on the map. It easily shows the distance and heading to my destination. I can enlarge the map enough that I don’t need reading glasses. It takes a bit of practice to get the hang of it, but it’s a powerful navigation tool, and it just works. I haven’t had any problems with it. I love this app. Highly recommended.
I'm upgrading this to 5 stars. After much searching I finally located an Android setting under App Battery Usage, which needs to be set to Unlimited. With this tweak the app works as it used to. [Original post: This used to be a great app, but at some point the GPS location and track recording functions stopped working correctly. Now my recorded tracks are wildly inaccurate, making the app virtually useless for me. Very disappointing.]
Wow, after reading other reviews it almost seems redundant to point out that recent updates to the app or Android have left this app completely dysfunctional and worthless. I have been unable to download any new maps, tracking for me has been mostly reliable, but I am unable to contact support and share the logs of the trouble. All of this after years and years of flawless reliability. What the hell happened?
