The full name of His Highness Imam Malik is Malik bin Anas bin Malik bin Abi Amir bin Amru bin al-Harith bin Ghaiman bin Khutsail bin Amru bin al-Harith (Dzu Asbah) bin Auf bin Malik bin Zaid bin Syadad bin Zur'ah.

Imam Malik's family comes from the village of Dzu Asbah, a tribe around the city of Himyar, in Yemen. Abu Amir -Imam Malik's grandfather- moved to the city of Medina during the Prophet's time with the intention of moving from his old place and responding to the call of Islamic da'wah. Abu Amir met the Prophet peace be upon him, so that historians include him in the group of noble companions of the Prophet peace be upon him.

Anas bin Malik died in the same year as the birth of Imam Malik bin Anas.

Anas bin Malik -father of Imam Malik- himself is a member of the Tabi'in generation, namely the generation who met the companions of the Prophet. Meanwhile, Imam Malik is a member of the Tabiut Tabi'in generation. Imam Malik's mother was named Aliyah bint Syuraik al-Azdiyah.
