While trying to connect to my local content server, I received an error message stating my (device) library is read-only, and to "see faq"--an external link to a website that no longer exists. Regardless, the likely reason for the error is the way file access permissions are handled differently in newer versions of Android--meaning, if you receive this error, there isn't much you can do, besides petition the custodian of this app to make the requisite changes to get it minimally functional again
Broken abandonware - avoid. Developer has abandoned the app - latest version is broken, and will break your ability to sync with Calibre, and connect with reader apps on your device. Changes to Android security mean the dev has released a simple update only, to stop the app being removed from the App store, but he didn't bother checking to make sure the app still worked properly. Either find a replacement sync tool, or rollback to an earlier version that still works via apk.
I have used and loved Calibre Companion for years; it is the best way of getting books from calibre on my computer onto my phone for reading. The latest update has made things much more difficult, though; while I can still get and mark books I cannot open a book in any reading app (I've tried my usual FBReader, Moon+, Aldiko...). It will happily attempt to open a book in Songbook - at least, that's the app that pops up when I hit Read. The book doesn't actually open.
