I've generally had positive experiences with this app. I can find what I'd like. I find that even with downloading the book first, something about the app itself doesn't work perfectly with my phone when I turn the screen off. The playback can be jumpy. I've seen that the app has previously had this issue with iPhones, but I have an Android. I do feel it has improved over time, so I'm not lowering my rating. I'm glad this app is available. It's a great companion for other library apps.
It doesn't work very well with Bluetooth controls. For example, if I have it paused for more than a minute or two, I'll have to open my phone and go into the app to restart the book. Or, when I'm listening in my car, the back 15 seconds won't work with my car controls. All of these things work perfectly for me with Libby and Spotify so I know it's not an issue with my phone's Bluetooth. Generally I'll use Hoopla as a last resort if the book I want isn't available anywhere else.
Hoopla is a wonderful alternative to the pricey commercial Audible app. However, some important features do not work properly. The sleep timer does not always turn off play at the end of chapters. And the search feature is tedious to use. There is room for improvement. Libby is easier to use and more reliable. I hope Hoopla will continue to add more titles as audiobooks! And there are no Ads!!!!!
