The Champions League theme song is the official anthem of the European Champions League, arranged and lyrics written by English composer Tony Britten in 1992. The lyrics consist of French, German and English lines mixed together.
This song is always played at the beginning and end of broadcasts of Champions League coverage on television as well as moments before the kick-off of the first round of Champions League matches accompanied by a ball-shaped banner and the logos of the competing clubs stretching across the middle of the field. A special vocal version is always performed live at the Champions League final.
Tony Britten, the songwriter, thinks the Champions League is an event or match that is so sacred and full of meaning that it has to make its own "theme song". He was inspired by the song "Zadok the Priest" by George Frideric Handel, a German-British composer who is famous for his songs which are often used in church ceremonies and royal ceremonies, especially the coronation ceremony of kings/queens. This song is as iconic as the Champions League trophy.
