System requirements:
Climber's Assistant uses the phone's barometric pressure sensor to calculate elevation. Not all phones have this sensor. You can still load, display and replay existing recordings without it, but you cannot get real-time information for your climb.
I may implement an external sensor if there is a demand. Please let me know if you are interested.
Accessibility Services:
You can trigger verbal status reports and other functions by pressing 'Volume' or with a Bluetooth-connected button without handling the phone. Climber's Assistant uses accessibility services to perform that function even when the screen is off as long as the app is running. Enabling accessibility services is entirely at the user's discretion, and no user data is ever obtained or logged from any accessibility service.
Accuracy:
Barometric pressure changes according to elevation, but it also drifts due to weather. This drift decreases the overall precision - especially over extended periods.
GPS doesn't drift. However, the typical vertical accuracy is ±15 meters (45 feet) which makes it unsuitable for tracking climbing elevation.
One can only calculate the straight-up distance from a pressure sensor. For that reason, Climber's Assistant has a setting to specify a route's slope and even has a rudimentary tool to measure it. The closer the entered slope is to the real one, the more accurately the app can calculate the distance climbed.
Climber's Assistant is a complex app with a lot of features. Please take the time and read the documentation to utilize its capabilities thoroughly.
* Never rely on any app to keep you safe! Always be aware of your situation while climbing.
