Snake Wallpapers Description
Snakes are long, footless carnivorous reptiles that belong to the order of scaly creatures.
Members of the suborder Serpentes can be distinguished from footless lizards by the absence of external ears and eyelids. Like all scales, snakes are ectothermic amniote vertebrates whose bodies are covered with overlapping scales. Most snake species have a skull structure with many more joints than that of their ancestors, lizards. Their highly mobile jaws, allowing these snakes to swallow whole prey more significantly than their head. Snakes have paired organs (like kidneys) that appear above the other instead of side by side to accommodate their narrow bodies, and most have one functional lung. Some species possess a pelvic girdle with a pair of remaining claws on either side of the cloaca.
Snakes live all over the world except Antarctica and most of the islands. There are fifteen distinct families described, comprising 520 genera and over 3900 species. They vary in size from the tiny 10 cm long species Leptotyphlops Carlae to pythons and anacondas that can reach 7.6 meters in length. The recently discovered fossil of the genus Titanoboa was 15 meters long. It is assumed that snakes evolved from both digger and aquatic lizards during the Cretaceous period. The diversification of modern snakes took place in the Paleocene period. Forty-seven species of snakes have been identified in Turkey.
Most snakes are non-venomous, and venomous snakes prefer to use their venom primarily to contain and neutralize prey rather than for defense. Some are species with venom strong enough to cause painful injuries and death to humans. Non-venomous snakes either swallow their prey alive or neutralize it by squeezing it. While it is difficult for amateurs to characterize snakes as non-venomous by appearance, it would be wise to stay away from them or approach them with a professional.
The fossil record of snakes is relatively weak, as snake skeletons are often small and fragile, so fossilization is rare.
