IOU - Lending between Friends Description
IOU App explained
Imagine you lend a book, tools, clothes, cables, anything else or even small amounts of money to family, friends, neighbours or work colleagues - both of you forget and you never hear about it again, delays in returns etc. Annoying...
The IOU App helps you to keep track of items you lend and borrow.
1. Create a new IOU containing info on
- the borrowed item
- the borrower
- and a return date.
2. Borrower accepts the IOU
3. The IOU App sends reminders and notifications
4. You can extend the borrowing period
5. Close the IOU when the item is returned - or gifted ;)
Features & Functionality
Dashboard: The Dashboard gives some quick access links and an overview of IOU's requiring your attention.
Creating a new IOU: Currently, only the lender can set up a new IOU. It consists of three key pieces of information: The borrower's details, the item being lent out, and the expected return date for the item. Once the IOU has been created, the app will notify the borrower of the pending IOU, and invite them to install the app (if they don't have it yet). Once installed, opening the app will automatically redirect the borrower to the new / pending IOUs. The borrower can then accept or decline the IOU. If accepted the transaction will be added to both the lender and borrower’s list of IOUs. If declined, the IOU will be cancelled and disappear from the IOU's section. However dispute resolution will have to happen outside the app for now. Messages recording the transaction will however be kept.
We are asking for a telephone number for user authentication and email address for notifications.
My IOUs: The My IOUs section lists the pending, open and overdue IOUs and offers various actions either the lender or the borrower can take (depending on the stage of the IOU) such as Send a Reminder, Close the IOU, Close the IOU and gift the item, etc.
Voucher: Each IOU is visually represented by a 'IOU voucher', which can be printed or shared for your records / convenience.
Inventory: This section lists the various items you have lent out or have available to lend. You can add or delete items in various categories. An item involved in an open IOU cannot be lent out again until the existing IOU is closed. Once closed the inventory item can be reused to create a new IOU with somebody else. Details of the inventory items differ according to the category - for instance, for books there is an ISBN barcode scanner and lookup to make the capturing of the item's details easier.
Adding Items: The app currently has 3 categories: Books, Tools and a catch-all 'Other'. Depending on the category different details are required - e.g. books will have an author, but tools will have a make / brand name. You can add a photo of the item for ease of reference and to record its condition at the time of the lending.
Messages: The Messages section keeps a record of all the actions and communications related to the IOU. Some messages are system generated depending on the action from the lender and borrower and you can send custom messages as well.
Profile & Settings: In these sections you can customize your profile (e.g. an avatar or photo) and IOU / communication settings. Currently the settings only relate to automated reminder messages sent to the borrower, but further settings may be added in time.
