KALRO GAPs Description
The Food Security Project (FSP) is a bilateral program for the German Development Cooperation (GDC) implemented by GIZ and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries on behalf of Germany and Kenya Governments respectively. One of the output areas of FSP is “effectiveness of the agricultural education, training and advisory system (extension system) is improved”. Among the various initiatives implemented under this output was strengthening of linkage of agricultural research and extension and advisory services. From 2018 a partnership with the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), through the Kakamega Regional Centre, 15 Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) protocols were developed.
The crops include; maize and bean intercrop, cassava, potato, sweet potato, banana, mango, passion, cowpea, onion and tomato. Key practices covered are on; inputs, site selection, land preparation, water management, conservation agriculture, climate-smart agriculture, and sustainable agriculture, post-harvesting and marketing.
Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for android phones is intended for growers/producers, producer organizations, agricultural experts and extension service providers both public and private, agricultural cooperatives, researchers, academia, universities.
