MITRE Food Waste Tracker Description
The MITRE Food Waste Tracker app is a smart tool to measure household food waste.
When you throw food down the drain or into the bin, it’s not only the valuable nutrients of the food that gets wasted, but all of the land, water, energy, and resources that went into growing, preparing, and transporting the food. An estimated 30-40% of all edible food is lost or wasted in America, despite high levels of food insecurity throughout the country. And bits and pieces of waste add up, both in cost and in landfills. Annually, 119 billion pounds of food are wasted in the United States, worth over $310 billion. Most of this toll falls on consumers, with an average family of four spending at least $1,500 annually on food that eventually ends up being wasted.
You can use this app to easily track your household food waste. Tracking food waste may take effort and focus, but it is an eye-opening and important exercise to see your own household’s own food waste. Get weekly insights into your household waste patterns through visualizations summarizing your food disposals, in addition to the approximate cost-saving opportunity of better utilizing your ingredients and leftovers.
