NABU AR Description
A fascinating animal that deserves our attention: the snow leopard. The new app of the Naturschutzbund Deutschland e.V. makes the rare and unknown big cat more tangible. Here's how and why:
Snow leopards love rough mountainous worlds: Native to Central Asia, they inhabit mountain regions between 2,700 and 5,000 meters above sea level. And they are perfectly adapted to life in the high mountains. Their thick fur is an ideal protection against the extreme cold, their large paws prevent them from sinking in the snow and their long, bushy tail helps them to keep their balance.
But snow leopards are among the most endangered big cats on earth. Due to human influences, their living space is shrinking. In addition, they are still ruthlessly hunted and killed for their beautiful fur and bones. Only a few thousand of the fascinating mountain cats still live in the wild.
That is why NABU has been campaigning for the protection and preservation of the snow leopard for years on several levels. These include improving protected areas and pasture management, supporting monitoring work to research the species and our anti-poaching unit "Gruppa Bars" which is on the trail of poachers. We also carry out educational work on site with lectures and workshops.
The “NABU AR” app is designed to bring people closer to the endangered big cat of Central Asia, to arouse interest and increase awareness. How it works?
Simply download the free app, scan the floor mat and you can bring a snow leopard to life. In the app itself you can also take great photos (or selfies) with the snow leo - for you, your family or social media.
Curious? Then get the app and try it out!
