The Netherlands, known informally as the Netherlands, is a constituent nation of the
Kingdom of the Netherlands (or Kingdom of Neerland; from the Dutch nederland) located in
western Europe. The country is a democratic parliamentary constitutional monarchy bathed
by the North Sea to the north and west, bordering Belgium to the south and Germany to the
east. The capital is Amsterdam or Amsterdam and the seat of government is in the city of
The Hague.
Geographically, the Netherlands is a low-lying country, with around 27% of its area and 60%
of its population located below sea level.
