Although Chevrolet was first introduced in India way back in 1928, with an office in Bombay (now Mumbai) and an assembly plant in Sewree, it had to stop operating in 1952-53 along with other foreign manufacturers as per an Indian government's directive. Chevrolet, under its present brand name and as a subsidiary of General Motors, began its operations in India in June 2003. Prior to this, General Motors used to manufacture and sell models like Opel Astra, Opel Corsa and Opel Vectra in association with Hindustan Motors.
