WISSYM 2023 – Mining Symposium Description
We are delighted to host the 5th International Mining Symposium “Re-Thinking Mining Remediation – Innovative approaches towards sustainability” from 25 – 29 September 2023 in Dresden, Germany. The 5th International Mining Symposium WISSYM 2023 will be held in cooperation with the VBGU - Association of Mining, Geology and Environment – and the IAEA - International Atomic Energy Agency.
The remediation of mining sites is often a highly complex and technologically demanding task that depends on available technologies and economic conditions. Mining remediation aims at the necessary and permanent reduction of risks and impacts on people and the environment. From the planning phase through to the completion of the remediative work, it is important to also consider future challenges with a view to achieve a sustainable subsequent use of remediated sites. Innovative reuse of former mining sites, including the implementation of efficient energy concepts and the responsible use of resources, all increase the social acceptance of mineral extraction and its consequences.
The experience and skills gained in over 30 years of active mining rehabilitation will also be needed in future, forming the base of making mining sustainable. At the Symposium, innovative approaches towards sustainable mining remediation will be in the focus of attention.
WISSYM 2023 offers a platform for exchanging and discussing experiences in mining remediation for national and international remediation specialists, mining operators, scientists, representatives of authorities and administration as well as consulting engineers.
