Place Jean Jaurès Description
Today, the Place Jean-Jaurès welcomes passers-by, who enjoy a drink on a terrace or simply stroll through the square.
While Montpellier's center of gravity has shifted, first towards the Comédie in the 19th century, then towards the Lez in modern times, it's worth remembering that for several centuries this was the heartbeat of the city, in which political, religious and commercial functions were concentrated.
What remains of this history? Few signs are visible today. The crypt beneath the square, the remains of two successive churches, remains closed for security reasons.
That's why the City of Montpellier has developed this digital application, restoring the site's appearance over the centuries. The first chapel, circa 1100, the Notre-Dame-des-Tables church, circa 1500, and the columned market hall, circa 1830, are brought to life, both inside and out, to give us a better understanding of our city and its evolution.
A journey through time, a journey to the heart of Montpellier... What a wonderful discovery!
