The term renal failure denotes inability of the kidneys to perform excretory function leading to retention of nitrogenous waste products from the blood. Acute and chronic renal failure are the two kinds of kidney failure. When a patient needs renal replacement therapy, the condition is called end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This activity reviews the causes, pathophysiology, presentation and diagnosis of renal failure and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in its management.


Kidney failure can also occur as a result of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This is the type of kidney disease that progresses gradually, often with few symptoms until the disease is advanced.4 In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2 out of 5 people with severe CKD (who are not on dialysis) do not even realize they have kidney disease. Symptoms include fatigue, nausea and vomiting, swelling, changes in how often you go to the bathroom and brain fog. Treatment includes dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Less common causes of chronic renal failure include: Polycystic kidney disease ,kidney infection symptoms, Reflux nephropathy (damage caused by urine backflow from the bladder into the ureters and kidney) ,Nephrotic syndrome ,Alport's disease ,Interstitial nephritis, Kidney stones , Prostate disease...
