Club Atlético River Plate, simply known as River Plate, is a football club from Argentina, founded on May 25, 1901.
River is stereotyped as the elite team of Buenos Aires, however, its origin, like that of its biggest rival, was in the neighborhood of La Boca, on the banks of the Rio de la Plata, between Aristóbulo del Valle streets; Caboto and Brandsen, and in the latter, just 800 meters away, is the La Bombonera stadium, home of Boca Juniors.
One of its founders, Pedro Martínez, was attracted by the huge boxes coming from Scotland at the Port of Buenos Aires with the inscription “River Plate” and he proposed this name, which was approved, for the new club.
Many say, in a simplistic way, that silver in English is silver and therefore the translation would be wrong, however, the name as the Rio da Prata is known in the British community is actually River Plate (Rio da Prata in Portuguese) and not Silver River, so much so that the first major naval battle of the Second World War, an episode in world history known as the 'Battle of the River Plate', which was fought between the British and German navies on December 13, 1939, near the River Plate Estuary, is known in English as 'The Battle of the River Plate'. This historical fact was made into a movie in 1956.
