Twisted Tales Description
Twisted Tales is the app for children who want to feel confident, inspired, creative and motivated to pursue their dreams. Through carefully thought-out reinterpretations of fairy tales, it aims to teach children empathy as well as assertiveness. Each reinterpreted fairy tale addresses a different theme, such as physical or mental impairment, gender roles etc., in a gentle and comprehensible way.
In this app, children will learn about Cinderella who only has one leg, and does not have to marry a prince to be happy, Aladdin becoming a fashion designer, Hansel and Gretel befriending the Witch, who doesn’t even want to eat them, etc. Each story is between 10 and 20 minutes long, so they are perfect for listening to on the commute, at bedtime, or at any time of the day.
In addition to the audio tales (available in several languages), the app will soon release a new feature that will give children the possibility to create their own twisted tale, allowing them to explore their creativity by adding their own twists. The app is aimed at children aged 6 to 12, but uses appropriate language for younger and older children as well.
It can be used by the child alone, although we'd encourage it to be used with parents, relatives and caretakers, as it fosters conversations about important topics in today's world.
Twisted Tales Features:
- Listen: includes 10-20 minute audio tales, each addressing a particular stigma (physical disability, gender norms and toxic masculinity, death and loss, Down syndrome, sexual abuse);
- A toolkit to trigger important conversations between parents and children that can help develop empathy and emotional intelligence;
- Create (coming soon): a guided tool for children to create their own tales with their own twists, helping them to explore their curiosity and creativity.
The whole project and the app were designed in collaboration with psychologists and educators.
Why Twisted Tales?
Teaching children empathy is not easy, but it is one of the most important skills and qualities to develop in order to help them navigate such a complex world. Twisted Tales are designed to help kids learn to recognise, understand and accept other people's feelings and needs, while at the same time carrying powerful messages of empowerment and self-fulfilment, helping them develop self-esteem and persevere in the face of challenges.
As each person and each child is unique, different and valuable, we as a society have the opportunity and the duty to raise confident, creative and empathetic children who know that they are smart and capable, and that difference and diversity are beautiful.
