HOW SYNTHETIC PHONICS WORKS
All words are composed of sounds. There are 44 sounds in the English language. To read, kids learn to blend individual sounds of a word. Like, blend the sounds /c-a-t/ to read 'cat'.
To spell, children learn to segment a word into the individual sound. Like 'pig' is broken to the sounds /p-i-g/ to spell. Once children master these skills, reading and spelling any word becomes effortless.
UptoSix Phonics App teaches 24 single sounds.
The rest of the sounds are covered in the UptoSix Phonics PLUS App.
DIGRAPH
Digraphs are two letters and one sound.
Like,
as in ‘rain’, ‘train’
as in ‘boat’ ‘coat’
as in ’bee’, ‘tree’
CONSONANT BLEND
Consonant blends are a set of two or three consonant letters that, when pronounced, each letter retain their sounds.
Like, ‘st’ in ‘street’, ‘bl’ in ‘black’, ‘gr’ in ‘grapes’.
TRICKY WORD
'Tricky' words cannot be sounded out. The sounds of the word 'the'/t-h-e/ cannot be blended. These words must be recognised by sight.
MAGIC ‘e’
The sounds of the vowels a, e, i, o, u are called short vowel sounds.
Digraphs ai, ee, ie, oa, ue make long vowel sounds.
Magic e, makes a short vowel sound long. Magic e generally sits at the end of the word, and put magic on the vowel which is one consonant away from magic e. The consonant forgets its sound and says its name.
Magic e becomes silent after performing the magic.
Like,
mad - made
kit - kite
cub - cube
ALTERNATE SPELLING
The same sound can be represented in different ways
‹ai›: as in rain, hail and snail
‹a_e›: ai as in cake, bake and plate.
‹ay›: ai as in day, hay and play
‹ei›: ai as in, vein and veil, reindeer
‹ea›: ai as in great, break
‹ee› ee as in bee, tree
Without Learning these concepts, phonics lessons will be incomplete.
In Conclusion
Synthetic-phonics teaching gives children strategies to decode and encode words.
Starting in a very simple way, this strong foundation gives children confidence and enables them to read and write thousands of words.
Gradually the children progress from reading words to phrases, then on to sentences and, finally, reading books.
