Non-Binary Syrian Refugee: Light

As said, the Songs of Travel game comes with five stories about five migrants, and the starting story of this game is about a non-binary person called Light. In the beginning, Light lived in Syria, but because he was non-binary, everyone ignored him from a young age. Most people and his peers insulted him because of being himself really. When the war started in Syria, Light moved to the Emirates, thinking it would be a good beginning.

But, breaking all hopes, things got worse as everyone called Light a refugee and a queer. The identity of Light was a problem for everyone, and they started telling Light to be straight. Therefore, he wanted to leave Arab and go to Australia because Light’s sister was a refugee in Australia, and she was studying there. So, Light tried to get his Australian student visa. Meanwhile, Light had to do some scrappy work to find the funds he needed to survive.

While doing so, Light waited three years to receive the message that his student visa was approved. Even though he didn’t feel like it was real, he packed the things he needed, went to Vienna on a flight, and finally met his sister. Even in Vienna, he had to go through some tough procedures, and no one ever acknowledged the real identity of Light. But still, he never condemned himself but looked for opportunities to change the system.

Van with the Duality Issues

This is the next story that you will unlock in Songs of Travel gameplay when you have completely read the first story about Light. Van is the daughter of a Vietnamese contract worker who grew up in East Germany, and her issue was to face duality issues because of being Vietnamese-German.

All this started because Van’s parents decided to stay in Germany, refusing the offers when the GDR ceased to exist, rendering its working contracts void, and all Vietnamese contract workers were offered free flights home and a bonus. Therefore, the first years were very hard financially because of the hatred against foreigners in Germany at that time. Even so, Van’s parents decided to open a flower shop on a smaller scale, and later, Van was born. Van’s parents worked six days a week without taking a little rest, so Van spent more time with them at the flower shop than at home.

Michele, with a Traumatic Past

The third story in this Songs of Travel game is about Michele, the son of Francesco Cicora, an Italian coal miner. The reason that Michele’s past is traumatic, according to the Songs of Travel game, is because his father died in a great mining disaster that happened in 1956. Michele’s father became a coal miner because he wanted to provide for his family. For that, he had to undergo many tests, and after making sure that he had the right physique for the hard labor, he was allowed to go and work in mines.

Once he signed the contracts, he and the others were sent to their accommodations, which were old barracks. The living conditions were harsh there, and not just that, but the Italians were never welcomed by the locals who lived in Marcinelle. The day after they arrived, the mining started, and the workers were only given a helmet and a lamp without formal training. Michele’s father and others worked harder in coal mines for eight years, and throughout these years, he financially supported the family by sending more letters. But then the tragic incident happened, and his body was never recovered.

Hasan, A Migrant, Moved to Austria

In the Songs of Travel game, the fourth story is about a boy called Hasan who moved to Austria when he was one year old. He moved to Austria because his mother moved there from Turkey. But as a child, Hasan loved returning to the village and spending time with friends and cousins. The village is the place where Hasan felt that he was free because the community was strong and connected.
