Science Experiments Description
Science experiences are essential for all students because science promotes understanding of the natural world and nurtures students' abilities to make informed decisions.
At its most fundamental, science is the search for patterns and the study of cause and effect.
Careful observation, inquisitiveness, sequential thinking, logical reasoning, and creativity are cornerstones of good science, and we expect all students to exhibit these traits as they explore and apply scientific principles.
The third grade science program expands the development of an inquiring mind through application of the scientific method.
During the units of study the students learn and apply the skills of observing, questioning, collecting data, predicting and communicating about scientific content.
In particular, they learn to develop testable questions and conduct fair test experiments as they investigate different aspects of the natural world.
Third grade science experiences include :
+ Animal Adaptations :
investigation into the ways in which many different animal species adapted, enabling the species to survive environmental changes – students complete activities that simulate different features of adaptation, including body coverings, teeth and eyes
+ How Do We Know What We Know? :
a series of "fair test" experiments enable students to appreciate that science experimentation is a way of understanding the world around them.
Science is not just a collection of facts – it is a way of identifying patterns and answering questions and exploring our world
+ Stewardship of Earth :
investigations designed to enhance students’ understanding of, appreciation of, and sense of responsibility for Earth and its environments – students learn ways we can preserve our resources by reducing, reusing, recycling, and replacing.
+ Soggy Paper :
an inquiry-based performance task during which students conduct a fair test experiment regarding the water absorbency of different types of paper products
