Lord Ganesha, also known as Ganapati and Vinayaka, is one of the most revered deities in Hinduism. He is widely worshipped as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences, and the deva of intellect and wisdom. Ganesha is often invoked at the beginning of rituals and ceremonies, as Hindus believe that seeking his blessings can pave the way for success and prosperity.
Here are some key aspects of Lord Ganesha:
1. Appearance:
• Ganesha is easily recognized by his distinct appearance. He is depicted as a deity with the head of an elephant and a human body. The elephant head symbolizes wisdom, and his large ears signify the importance of listening.
• Ganesha is often portrayed with four arms, each holding different objects such as a noose (to capture obstacles), an elephant goad (to guide and encourage), a modak (a sweet dumpling, representing the rewards of a spiritual life), and a broken tusk (symbolizing sacrifice).
2. Birth:
• The story of Ganesha's birth is a well-known Hindu myth. According to the popular narrative, Ganesha was created by the goddess Parvati using sandalwood paste while she was bathing. She breathed life into the figure and assigned him the task of guarding the entrance while she bathed.
• When Lord Shiva, Parvati's husband, returned, he was denied entry by the young boy (Ganesha), who did not recognize him. This led to a confrontation, and in the ensuing struggle, Ganesha's head was cut off by Shiva. To appease Parvati's grief, Shiva replaced Ganesha's head with that of an elephant.
3. Symbolism:
• Ganesha is revered for his ability to remove obstacles and provide wisdom. His broken tusk is a symbol of sacrifice and the idea that one may need to give up something to gain wisdom.
