Tahqiq and Takhrij : Dr. Rif'at Fauzi and Abdul Muttalib
Imam Syafi'i named his book Al-'Umm, which means the Mother Book. Fiqh issues ranging from worship, munakahah, muamalah and siyasa, are explained in detail with evidence from the Al-Qur'an, As-Sunnah, Ijma' and Qiyas, in the book which is the main reference for ahlu sunnah wal jama'ah who belong to the Shafi'iyah school of thought. Later scholars placed this book as the main reference in developing contemporary fiqh fatwas.
This is the Book of Al Umm by Imam Muhammad bin Idris Asy-Shafi'i. We present it to Hadith and Fiqh scholars in a form that has been edited by the editors, explained the status of the hadiths, and made the material accurate so that they can draw from its clear and abundant sources.
Before we talk about the book Al Umm, our efforts to present it in a new packaging, as well as great attention to the best of our abilities, we would like to give a glimpse of the life of Imam Ash-Shafi'i.
We are content with outlines of his life because a complete description of his biography requires volumes of books as has been done by many scholars.
In the following, we present some important points quoted from Imam Ash-Syafi'i's own statements, to the extent that we can find them easily.
Imam Asy-Shafi'i's full name is Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Idris bin Abbas bin Uthman bin Shafi' bin Sa'ib bin Ubaid bin Abdu Yazid bin Hasyim bin Muthalib bin Abdu Manaf bin Qushai.
His genealogy met the Prophet Muhammad in Abdu Manaf.
Imam Asy-Shafi'i said, "I was born in Ghazza in 150 H., then I was taken to Mecca at the age of 2 years."
My father came from Tubalah (a place in Yemen), and he migrated to Medina. But there happened an event that he did not like so he migrated to Asqalan and settled there. That's where I was born, then my father died. Then my uncle came from Makkah to Asqalan and took me to Mecca when I was two years old.
Ibn Abi Hatim quoted Ash-Shafi'i as saying, "I was born in Asqalan, and when I was two years old my mother took me to Mecca."
These narrations do not conflict because Asqalan is the main city that has existed for a long time, while it is located close to Ghazza. Asqalan is his city, so when Imam Asy-Syafi'i mentions Ghazza, he means his village, and when he says Asqalan, he means his city.
Ibn Hajar said, "The meeting point of all these opinions is that Imam Ash-Shafi'i was born in Ghazza, Asqalan and when he was two years old he was brought by his mother and uncle to Mecca."
The Al Umm Imam Asy-Shafi'i book is divided into 16 volumes:
