This book before you is a collection of some of the papers of the Religious Studies Club (KKA) which will be organized by the Wakaf Paramadina Foundation, Jakarta. The club itself takes the form of a large discussion meeting with an audience of about 200 people, once a month. With a certain membership and participation system as well as a discussion tradition that is pluralistic, open and tolerant, KKA Paramadina has been running relatively smoothly and continuously, since its inception in October 1986 until now.
Discussions in KKA Paramadina are always preceded by the presentation of two papers. The first paper from a guest speaker, as the main speaker, who is invited to discuss a particular topic. The second paper was made by members of Paramadina insiders, with the intention of maintaining the coherent line of thought of the discussion series from start to finish. In this way, it is hoped that there will be a consistent unity of views that are to be developed, with the topics of discussion selected and determined as part of a series of efforts to re-understand Islamic teachings. So far, I've written most of those second papers. Except for one or two papers that did not come from the special Paramadina forum, this book is a collection of some of the papers I wrote.
In accordance with its purpose as material for discussion, each paper is made to deal with a particular problem.
This topical approach is needed to sharpen the focus of the discussion, so that optimal results can be obtained. But each paper itself, even the total number of papers in this book, must be seen as part of an attempt to understand Islam more comprehensively and must be understood within the framework of the unity of the teachings of religion. Because of this, this book will still be followed by other books, including and especially, books which will be a collection of further papers from myself and from other writers for various Paramadina scientific study activities, especially the Religious Studies Club.
Hopefully the material content of this application can be useful for self-introspection and better improvement in everyday life.
