The psalter is divided into 20 catechisms. Each catism is in turn divided into three states. Each state usually contains 1–3 chapters. An exception is Psalm 118. Due to its length, this chapter constitutes the entire 17th Catism.
Each holy service contains fixed parts of the Psalms that are read or sung each time these services are officiated. In addition, certain services of the Clocks contain certain readings arranged by catechisms. They are rotated daily so that outside of Lent the Psalter is read in its entirety within a week.
During Holy and Lent, the reading of the catechisms is hastened so that the Psalms are read in their entirety twice a week.
