Tunis map Description
Tunis is the capital of Tunisia and the capital of the homonymous governorate.
It stands on the banks of a lagoon near ancient Carthage, joined to the Mediterranean Sea by a navigable channel of about 10 km that connects it to the port of La Goletta.
Born as a modest village located in the shadow of Carthage, Kairouan and Mahdia, Tunis was finally designated the capital on September 20, 1159 (5 ramadan 554, for the Muslim calendar) by the will of the Almohad dynasty, later confirmed in its statute under the hafside dynasty. in 1228 and also at the independence of the country, on March 20, 1956.
Tunis is the economic and commercial capital of Tunisia. The density of the city's road, motorway and airport structure makes it a convergence point for national transport. This situation is the result of a long evolution, in particular of the centralistic conception which has attributed a considerable role to capital and which has led to the concentration of the main institutions.
