Tokyo, the capital of Japan, with its 13 million inhabitants is confirmed as the most populated metropolis in the entire country and is one of the main cities in the world. Its history has ancient origins that date back to 1603, when Tokugawa Ieyasu established the feudal government (shogunate) from which a prosperous development began. At the time, Tokyo was called Edo. The political, economic and cultural center of Japan, the city is made up of 23 districts comprising 26 cities, 5 towns and 8 municipalities.
Geographically speaking, Tokyo is located almost in the center of the archipelago of Japan, in the southern part of the Kanto region, and borders to the east with the prefecture of Chiba, bordered by the Edo-gawa river, to the west with the mountains of the prefecture of Yamanashi, to south with the prefecture of Kanagawa, whose limit is defined by the Tama-gawa river, and finally to the north with the prefecture of Saitama. With a total area of 2,194 km2, it is the third smallest prefecture. A vast area of mountains, hills and plateaus stretches from east to west.
