Riven is one of the most complex champions in the game. With tons of different item builds, guides, and more, it can get quite overwhelming to get the hang of the Champion. Thankfully, this Wild Rift guide for Riven is extremely comprehensive, detailed, and easy to follow that should help you learn the Champion in absolutely no time! If you haven't already, you can download League of Legends: Wild Rift for Free on LDPlayer.
Each Champion in the game has a certain set of abilities and skills that define them. With passive and other abilities, here's a list of Riven's abilities alongside a brief explanation of what each ability does.
INNATE: Riven gains a powerful Charge for 6 seconds every time she uses an ability. This is extremely powerful and can be used to stacking up to 3 times and be refreshed on other ability casts. Riven's basic attacks also consume a Charge to deal 30% − 60% (based on level) AD bonus physical damage.
This is affected by critical strike modifiers.
Runic Blade is Riven's passive which gives your next auto attack bonus damage every time you cast an ability. This can stack up to 3 auto attacks. You can abuse this by using the Broken Wings + AA + Broken Wings + AA + Broken Wings + AA.
Riven can also activate Broken Wings about three times before the ability goes on CD. If Riven does not end up recasting the ability within 4 seconds, the ability goes on cooldown.
Each of the three casts has Riven slash with her sword, dealing physical damage to all enemies struck. The ability also helps to reset her basic attack timer and ordering her to basic attack the target of Broken Wings if there are any.
PHYSICAL DAMAGE:
15 / 35 / 55 / 75 / 95 (+ 45 / 50 / 55 / 60 / 65% AD)
FIRST CAST: Riven dashes up to 225 units towards the target enemy or in the direction she is currently facing, affecting all enemies around the target area 100 units away. This cast cannot cross terrain.
Broken Wings is Riven’s first ability in which she dashes in the direction she is facing or the target that you have your cursor in, dealing physical damage to anyone in range of the dash. This can be reactivated within the next 4 seconds.
Broken Wings 2nd cast is equal to 1st cast.
Broken Wings' 3rd cast is a bit longer than the 1st and 2nd, but she knocks up enemies around her and has more range. This can also be used to jump over most of the walls in the game, known as "wall hops."
Tip: Broken Wings Cooldown starts counting on the first cast, which means you can cast Broken Wings, wait 3.90 seconds, cast Broken Wings and wait another 3.90 seconds, and then you can engage with your 3rd cast, and you'll have your 1st cast up again if you have at least 35% CDR.
ACTIVE: Before the cast time, Riven's sword emits a burst of runic energy that shocks nearby enemies, dealing physical damage and applying a stun for 0.75 seconds.
PHYSICAL DAMAGE:
55 / 85 / 115 / 145 / 175 (+ 100% bonus AD)
Ki Burst is Riven's 2nd ability. In it, she stuns everyone around her for about 0.75 seconds while also dealing damage.
Tip: You can also use Ki Burst to stop abilities like Rammus Powerball or Camille Hookshot
ACTIVE: Riven Dash dashes to the target location (but not through terrain) while Hybrid resistances shields herself for about 1.5 seconds.
SHIELD STRENGTH:
95 / 125 / 155 / 185 / 215 (+ 100% bonus AD)
You can also cast other abilities during the clash and can also be cast during Ki Burst or Blade of the Exile cast times if they are being used at the end or briefly after the dash.*
Valor will cast at max range if cast beyond that.
Valor is Riven's third ability in which she dashes towards the cursor direction, getting a shield for 1.5 seconds.
Tip: Valor cancels any of Riven animations, which means it's your base ability to combo. The most common one is the double cast, which consists of Valor + AA + Ki Burst + Broken Wings.
ACTIVE: Riven mends her broken Blade and empowers it for 15 seconds, gaining 20% AD Attack damage bonus attack damage, Range 75 bonus range on her basic attacks, and increased range on Broken Wings and Ki Burst. After 0.5 seconds, she gains the ability to cast Wind Slash once for the duration.
Blade of the Exile is Riven's ultimate ability in which she empowers her sword, gaining (20% AD) bonus attack damage,75 range on auto-attacks, and some range on Ki Burst and Broken Wings for 15 seconds. She also activates it again to also cast Wind Slash, doing damage in a cone where she casts it, lower hp enemies take more damage.
Runes are a general supplement to your Champion's abilities. These rune builds are a general idea of what you should be building as the Champion can benefit from both of them in different situations. The Champion can benefit from all of them in entirely different situations.
Conqueror: Basic attacks and abilities generate stacks of Conqueror on enemy champions hit, up to one per attack or cast. Each stack of Conqueror lasts 6 seconds and grants 2 − 6 (based on level) bonus Attack Damage or 3 − 9 (based on level) Ability Power (Adaptive), stacking up to 5 times, for a maximum of 10 − 30 (based on level) bonus.
Attack Damage or 15 − 45 (based on level) Ability Power (Adaptive).
In our opinion, Conqueror is perhaps the best Rune for Riven because she can stack it really fast. The rune also provides her with bonus Attack Damage which scales well with Riven. She also gets some spell vamp/life steal which is great on her.
Triumph: Champion takedowns restore 10% missing health. Deal 3% increased damage to enemies below 35% health.
Triumph is an excellent rune that mostly focuses on the healing you receive. It helps turn fights around in your favor and provides her with an extra 20 gold on taking downs. It is quite a nice little bonus for helping you get fed.
Hunter – Vampirism: Gain 2% Physical Vamp or 2% Magical Vamp (Adaptive). Unique champion takedowns grant two bonus Attack Damage with 1% Physical Vamp or 4 Ability Power with 1% Magical Vamp up to 7% Physical Vamp and ten bonus Attack Damage or 7% Magical Vamp and 20 Ability Power at five stacks (Adaptive).
Bone Plating: After you take damage from a champion, the next three consecutive spells or basic attacks against you deal reduced damage.
Sweet Tooth: Increases Honeyfruit healing by 25%, each fruit is eaten by yourself, or a nearby allied champion also provides gold.
Here is an idea of Riven’s Summoners Spells and what you should be building:
Flash: Flash is your engage summon and all in between summoner. You should take it every time. There is absolutely no time to replace this spell. It is by far the most important to take on almost all champions. Flash helps you engage, close the gap, and gives enemies no time to react at all.
Teleport: Teleport is a must in this meta in almost every circumstance. It works much better when you have to be more passive. Against tanky champions, champions you have a hard time against in lane, or if you are just a more passive player in general. It is a great alternative to Ignite. You should go for it now due to how much of an impact teleporting has.
It allows your top laners to have great map pressure. It is generally used for split pushing, turning team fights, and returning quickly to any lane in the early game.
Ignite: Ignite provides you with tons of burst damage which is very useful against healers like Dr. Mundo. You can use the rune when you are trying to be aggressive. Try to win the lane hard and get the game to snowball.
The rune is quite situational as it gives amazing kill pressure that goes hand in hand with anyone who plays aggressively. It falls off quite a bit after about level 4. Whether you use it to burst an enemy down, reduce life steal and health regeneration, or just to finish off an enemy, Ignite does it best.
There is no champion in Wild Rift who should ever follow a linear skill progression path. However, there is always a general guide available for you so that you are able to understand what abilities make the most sense at every stage of the game.
However, you should always an idea of why you are leveling a particular skill up and why you aren’t going for any other one as they help you understand your power spikes much better.
While each Champion in every game should have a slightly different Item Build depending on the general situation, having a vague understanding of what the pros might be building in most chances helps you make the right decision:
Long Sword: The most common item for Riven because it provides you with extra damage and sustains.
Ionian Boots of Lucidity: You should be getting this item as soon as possible because it gives you a lot of AD + Cool Down Reduction. It gives you tons of outplay potential that you end up losing lane if you don’t play correctly with this.
Clack Cleaver: The third most common item built-in Riven as it provides you with survivability, damage, movement, and armor-piercing. We recommend taking it when you face tanks or when you are even or behind in lane.
Sterak’s Gage: This is an extremely consistent buy for Riven in the fourth place because it provides you with tons of survivability and gives you tons of damage. You should go for the item almost every game.
Caulfield’s Warhammer: The item you should be going for first because it gives you tons of Attack Damage and Cool Down reduction, which is really good for Riven.
Synergies are champions that work well with you and are a wonderful addition to have to your team.
Lulu: Turns you into an absolute raid boss in team fights.
Orianna: Has a perfect team fight combo with you.
Rammus: He’s just strong by himself at ganking. If he ends up giving you a lead, you can carry the game. Take a look at our complete Rammus guide for more information about the Champion.
Diana: Diana has a huge combo to execute in team fights or skirmishes. If you both fight in both places, you pretty much win it.
Champions you definitely do not want to lane against. These can be considered as hard counters and can completely wreck your game.
Renekton: In the Renekton matchup, you will need to have Ignite and win at Level 1 and go all in. If you are not able to fight at level one because Renekton gets his rage sooner, just stay under the tower until level 6. When you are at level 6, you can go all-in with igniting if he ends up using his second or first ability in a sub-par manner.
It is perhaps the worst matchup for Riven. We recommend going for plated steel caps if you are having tons of trouble. Take a look at our Renekton guide for more information about the Champion.
Kennen: Kennen is one of the worst matchups for Riven as he has tons of stuns and can just third skill out of your trades. Here, go for Mercurial Boots early if you want to get a chance to kill him.
Gragas: Gargas has an extremely tough matchup if he's good because his dash has the most priority in the game. Try not to use your third skill if he has his as well.
Akali: Just dodge her first skill and go for a trade. You should be winning in most cases.
Nasus: Push waves to bounce and freeze them. You need to kill Nasus before he is at 6. If you don’t, you will lose lane and eventually the game.
Yasuo: Skill matchup but is much better for Riven. Just sidestep his first skill and remove his shield. Then, you want to try and give a little poke before going all in. If you have problems, get plated steel caps. Take a look at our Yasuo guide for more info.
Rengar: Do not fight until level. Also, do not farm because he might jump you, which might one-shot you. Just wait until level 3 and freeze the wave on your tower. After that, you should still be fine. At level 6, if you have Executioner's Calling, you should go all in.
Darius: Darius champions are hard to beat because they do not use their third skill for a gap closer. They use it to cancel your third First Skill. What you should be doing is at Level 1, you both have ignite, and he ends up starting with his first skill. You can go all in, and you will win if you dodge the outside part of his first skill. Otherwise, you should make quick trades where you bait his Third Skill. You can then go all-in.
LDPlayer is arguably the best emulator out there and is known for its various features that help take your Wild Rift experience to the absolute next level. These can give you the same experience of playing the game on a PC with your mouse and keyboard. You will also be enjoying High FPS gameplay that lets you play the game at the highest performance metric possible. Here's how you can use key mapping to your advantage and destroy opponents in League of Legends: Wild Rift.
You can also use LDPlayer’s Macro Feature! It lets you record a specific set of actions that you can then use at any particular time by using the bind assigned. This, in turn, helps you keep up with elusive heroes as you'll only have to worry about your positioning.
Pros and Cons are the sequential differences ion. In most cases, get an idea of their advantages and disadvantages can help you decipher whether a particular champion is worth playing in the first place.
Therefore, we recommend developing a keen eye on each of these key pre-requisites as they are fundamental to understanding whether a champion is meant for you.
Riven is generally considered one of those champions worth playing as your main because she is never out of meta, and you can learn to play her to absolute perfection. Once you get the hang of her, you turn into an unstoppable powerhouse. Pros are parts of the Champion that simply make sense. These are the key defining factors that you must utilize in order to perform well with the Champion.
Cons are part of a Champion that is not really favorable. You might end up facing the cons of Riven pretty quickly if you start playing her. She is quite hard to play and requires tons of time to master. She has had some bad matchup and can also be quickly countered by Crowd Control because of lacking survivability. You should vary of them when you try to play a Champion. Thankfully, Riven does not really have a substantial amount of cons. However, here’s a list of a few of them:
Combos are a set of instructions used to dedicate your ability to understand and comprehend certain parts of a champion. These combo guides can help gauge your understanding of a particular champion and practice some realistic situations where having an idea of the Champion is necessary.
Here’s a list of some of the combos you might need to learn when you play Riven in Wild Rift:
Riven's first blood potential is initially dependent on who she is laning against when it comes to the early game. You can ready your Broken Wings by reactivating it as often as possible as it has a low cooldown and has three new charges.
If you are against a melee champion, you should be taking Ki Burst at Level 2 and engage with them as quickly as possible. If you end up hitting Level 2 first, the trade should be in your favor with extra stats and ability coming into play. This allows you to take priority of the lane. If your opponent is extremely tanky or is ranged, you can take Valor to the farm safely.
You can outtrade almost anyone in the game with your full combo. You will turn into a lane menace that can capitalize on the mistakes your enemy makes really well. You can also do your quick Q combo ending with your stun and using Valor to shield yourself.
Most matchups can be easily played as a one-shot after level 6. Plus, after getting the hang of your combos, you can quickly secure 1v1 duels and even turn around a 1v2, especially if they think you can dive. Make sure to keep an eye on any potential ganks that might be coming up along the way.
The Champion is absolutely amazing at clearing waves, even in the early game. Make sure to push the waves when you want to recall back to your fountain to get as much CS as possible while denying the enemy the lane. Also, you should try to cash the lane to the enemy's side as often as possible when so that they do not pull ahead.
Once you are outside of the laning phase, you will have the option to group up with your team and take objectives, or you can attempt to split push. If your team can fight well, you can group up with them, invade the jungle, force fights over objectives, and even push lanes.
The Champion is relatively great at split pushing and is an excellent duelist. Her wave clear is quite strong, and you can cap her Cooldown Reduction to an abysmal level to provide her with some insane levels of survivability. This helps her apply tons of lane pressure to the map. Here’s a general idea of what you should be doing in case you want to split push:
You should start learning how to split push the lane opposite to the most important neutral objective. If you have teleport up, you can take the majority of the pressure off the objective. The enemy will not answer you solo, and they will be forced to give up on the objective.
However, if you identify that the entire enemy team will be collapsing on you soon, you should start communicating with your team to complete the objective as quickly as possible.
While you are not a tank, you might be treated as one. However, your main job is to take out the backline carries and peel for your ADC / APC as much as possible.
Riven is one of the most complex and rewarding champions to play in the game. She has an extremely high skill ceiling and floor and is thus quite competitive. But, with the advent of simpler champions that do most of what she does, if not better, learning her takes a lot of time, finesse, and motivation but is worthwhile.
