There is no doubt that Imam Abu Hanifah, An-Nu'man bin Thabit bin Zuthiy, is one of the absolute mustaqil mujtahids whose opinions were finally codified by his students so that they became the Hanafi school of thought.
His grandfather, Zuthiy was a man of Persian blood who was one of the most respected in his people. He was once a prisoner of the Islamic armies who conquered Iraq, then was released from prisoner of war and finally received Islamic guidance. After that he moved to Kufa,
It was there that he met Ali bin Abi Talib -radhiyallahu 'ahnu - and established a very good relationship. This good relationship was continued later by his son, Thabit, who according to many traditions he was prayed for by Ali bin Abi Talib -radhiyallahu 'ahnu- so that his children and grandchildren would be blessed by Allah.
Imam Ali's prayer was finally answered by Allah, so that finally he was blessed with a child named An-Nu'man, who later became known as Imam Abu Hanifah. We can see how the prayers of righteous people who surrender their souls and bodies for the struggle in the way of Allah are efficacious prayers.
